It's time to act on Child Poverty

Act now to give all of Canada’s children the right to a decent life

We’d like to tell you that November 24 is a day to feel good about being a Canadian. But right now, we can’t. Twenty years ago, on November 24, 1989, all of our elected representatives voted in the House of Commons to make child poverty history in Canada by the year 2000. It was to be our legacy for the generations of the new Millennium.

Sadly, it is 2009 and our MPs have failed to keep that promise. One in 10 Canadian children still live in poverty. Even more shocking, that figure does not include children in the Territories, on reserves, or in shelters. In First Nations’ and Inuit communities 1 in every 4 children grows up in poverty.

It’s time to end this national shame and you can help by joining with us in Campaign 2000’s action campaign. As one of our coalition partners, they work tirelessly on behalf of Canada’s children. They will be releasing their National Report Card on Child and Family Poverty on November 24 at a Breakfast for MPs.

As your constituent, I am deeply distressed that so many Canadian children still live a life of poverty in one of the world’s richest countries.

Twenty years ago on November 24th 1989, every MP in the House of Commons voted to end child poverty in Canada by the year 2000.

Yet Canada’s child poverty rate is officially 9.5%.  That means almost 1 in every 10 children still lives in poverty in one of the richest countries in the world.  And that figure does not include children in the Territories, on reserves, or in shelters.  In First Nations and Inuit communities 1 in every 4 children grows up in poverty.

As my representative in Ottawa, I am urging you to take action to end this national  shame.

There are many things you can do on behalf of Canada’s children.   As my MP I ask you to work to ensure your party adopts recommendations to increase the Canada Child Tax Benefit , expand eligibility for EI , invest in social housing and early childhood education and care.  An $11/hour federal minimum wage would also be very helpful to families struggling to raise their children decently.
