Break a World Record, End Poverty, Hold World Leaders to Account.
We need 20 minutes of your time.
From October 16th-18th millions of people around the world will unite to show global solidarity, break a world record for the largest coordinated mobilization of civil society, and demand leaders live up to their commitments to meet and exceed the Millennium Development Goals – essentially to halve global poverty by 2015.
Last year 117,000,000 people around the world stood up but only 80,000 were from Canada. We can change this. The more people that STAND UP the more governments see citizens care and the more likely they are to take action on the issues.
We are asking people to get in touch with their former high schools (or any you may have ties with) to get permission to have someone read the STAND UP pledge (60 seconds) over the PA system and distribute Make Poverty History sign on sheets to the various classrooms within the school. Then the teachers count the number of students that stood up in each class while collecting the sign on sheets. Then they report the numbers back to the principle who enters them online at www.standagainstpoverty.org before OCT 18 ends on GMT. Make Poverty History has produced a good toolkit on how to do this http://www.makepovertyhistory.ca/sites/default/files/StandUp_09_Canada_English.pdf
We would be delighted if you were interested in taking part and if you were able to pass this information along to anyone else who might be interested.
This past year has seen $18 trillion to bailouts while the past 50 years have seen $2 trillion in all foreign assistance to all recipients. This has shown more than ever that this is nothing more than a matter of political will.
The G8/G20 and the MDG review are in Canada this coming year. If there has ever been a time for concerted action on political leaders to make poverty history it is now. http://www.makepovertyhistory.ca/en/standup and www.standagainstpoverty.org
Please get in touch with a high school, or send the above to a friend. This takes 20 minutes and can mobilize hundreds of people.
Thank you in advance for your consideration from Make Poverty History Canada.

Oct 17
Our Sat Oct 17 2009 Stand Up event at Fairy Lake Park Amphitheatre is the 4th we have organized for the area (York Region Ontario Canada) and is shaping up to be the best ever! We not only literally have a mic for the voices of poverty, but also for the anti-poverty advocates, clergy, associated group leaders, and politicians. After hearing from and about the impoverished we shall open up the mics to various keynote speakers..a segment will allow for short words from any politicians who dare speak followed by an "open mic" period. The last portion of the event will be dedicated to entertainment - especially forms depicting poverty and encourages original themed material. Free healthy hot and cold food and free trade coffee round out the event.
Come Make Poverty History...on Oct 17..
The march in itself isn't what makes the difference, it is....
The march or MPH rally or Stand Up will generate awareness in everyday people. When enough people become aware of their political power and how our government policies contribute to global and local poverty, they will pressure politicians to create more equitable policies. Our current economic and foreign policies advantage the already advantaged. AID is merely a band-aid. While it is part of the solution, it is more important
to empower others to create their own sustainable, abundant economies.
Poverty
Ending poverty is not as easy as getting millions of people together for a march. While this is a great idea, unless everyone pitches in from their own funds, poverty will never end. online casino
