Your vote can help to make poverty history
This election presents a historic opportunity to make poverty history.
Defeating the Conservative Party could pave the way to realizing our goals for Canada to be a leader in reducing global poverty, implementing a plan to eliminate poverty in Canada and doing more to help reduce the impact of climate change on poor countries.
Which parties support Make Poverty History goals?
Make Poverty History was quite successful in our lobby efforts to get political parties to include our key goals in their election platforms. All major parties except the Conservatives have committed to key Make Poverty History goals. You can check our Make Poverty History’s analysis of what the different party’s platforms have to say about global and domestic poverty.
Our partners in the Dignity for All Campaign have also done an analysis of where the parties stand on domestic poverty.
And another member organization of Make Poverty History, Campaign 2000, has also done an excellent analysis of party platforms on domestic poverty issues.
Where do candidates stand?
We also asked all candidates whether they support Make Poverty History’s Call to Action, which calls for Canada to be a leader in reducing global poverty, implement a plan to reduce and ultimately eliminate poverty in Canada and reduce the impact of climate change on poor countries.
You can find how candidates in your riding responded by going to the Candidates Supporting Make Poverty History page and clicking on the map to find your riding and see which candidates have said they support the Make Poverty History goals.
We had some difficulty getting candidate contact information from some of the parties and there was a delay in getting the request out to all the candidates. So some candidates may not have had sufficient time to respond. Just because a candidate is not listed does not mean they do not support Make Poverty History.
You should also consult the results from several other groups that asked candidates similar questions.
The Candidates Against Poverty web site that asked candidates if they would pledge to work to close the growing gap between rich and poor in Canada.
UNICEF asked candidates what they would do to close the poverty gap for kids in Canada and the world.
Your vote is precious. Use it wisely. Vote for the candidate and party you feel can best help to make poverty history at home and around the world.
