Make Poverty History is a coalition of progressive organizations uniting for action on poverty and inequality. Together, we create opporunities to raise our voices and push for an end to poverty in Canada and around the world. Stand Up is one of those opportunities, and this year is a chance for your organization to get involved and participate in a growing movement for change.

Already, organizations from coast to coast to coast have taken to hosting Stand Up events. We have initiated resources and organizing earlier in the year, to ensure that organizations wishing to participate in Stand Up are supported and ready to go on the 17th.

To make Stand Up the pivotal moment it is meant to be, we will need our partnering organizations to get involved in the following ways:

1. Host and facilitate Stand Up events/moments

You can organize:

• Events
• Stand Up moments in pre-existing events (even a Stand Up in your office!)
• Invite your MP or local decision maker to your event or organize a separate meeting
• Spread the word
• Make noise for the MDGs on September 18th

2. Help build a critical mass of Make Poverty History sign-ons

Ask supporters to sign onto Make Poverty History and help distribute Make Poverty History white bands.

3. Use social media to help promote Stand Up to your networks

By using online tools like Twitter and Facebook to help to promote both your event and Stand Up in general, you are helping Make Poverty History grow in new and exciting ways as well as adding valuable visibility to your organization online.

4. Work with Make Poverty History staff to co-brand and co-promote Stand Up events

The countdown to Stand Up 2010 has begun! On September 17, 18 and 19 join with millions of people around the world and help us make 2010 the year our leaders can no longer ignore our calls to end poverty at home and abroad. Last year over 173 million people took part in Stand Up and we hope to engage even more people this year. 2010 is an especially critical year. With the G8 and G20 meetings in Canada behind us, the next major international Summit where world leaders can take action on poverty and climate change is the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Summit, in New York from September 20–22, 2010. This Summit is the last big moment to pressure countries to develop and implement 5 year actions plans with policies that will get the MDGs back on track and achieved by 2015. Desmond Tutu famously said, "The time has come to stop talking and start taking action. If everyone who wants to see an end to poverty, hunger and suffering speaks out then the noise will be deafening. Politicians will have to listen." Stand Up is our chance to do that.
