Stand Up On Campus
Think Stand Up is just an event? Think again! Stand Up actions can be integrated into almost anything you are doing on campus or just with your friends. From September 17-19, 2010 dedicate some time to actions big or small focused on Actions Against Poverty.
Programming Ideas:
-
Merge - Already have an event, concert or get together planned during the Stand Up weekend? Use this as a platform to integrate some of the below ideas.
-
Collaborate – Work with social justice groups on your campus like Oxfam or Engineers Without Borders or sororities/fraternities, or faith groups and plan a joint action. Host a speaker, discussion panel, workshop, rally, etc.
- Wear White – Make a statement by encouraging your fellow students to all wear white. Go one step further and buy or make your own Make Poverty History bracelets or armbands.
-
Cinema - Hold a movie night. There is no shortage of documentaries about issues related to poverty. For a great film and discussion starter on poverty in Canada, check out the new film "Poor No More" and this great screening organizers toolkit (PDF). Be sure to read the Stand Up Pledge or use the Stand Up video PSA.
-
Tabling - Set up a table in a high-traffic area of campus and invite people to sign up with Make Poverty History and learn about Stand Up.
-
Radio – Use the Stand Up On the Radio fact sheet to include Stand Up programming on your campus radio station.
-
Decorate – Download and print a Stand Up poster. Decorate your dorm, campus or classroom. White wrap your room, building or trees. For a free banner, contact Make Poverty History at standup@makepovertyhistory.ca.
-
Get Creative – Use your imagination and plan a crazy photo shoot, flash mob or march to educate your peers about Stand Up.
-
Get Social – Use Facebook, Twitter, Youtube or Myspace to send your Stand Up messages to your online friends.
-
Sign Up – Encourage your friends to Stand Up by signing the petition at www.makepovertyhistory.ca.
-
Media – Contact your community media outlets and let them know what you are doing to Stand Up. Feeling really passionate? Write an op-ed for your campus paper about why Stand Up is important. Use the media toolkit for more ideas.
-
Share – No matter what you do be sure to tweet us a picture @endpovertynow or email youth@makepovertyhistory.ca. Remember to register you action and order a resource kit.
