Get to the point logo The world's richest nations are meeting in Canada for the G8 summit in 2010. Foreign aid will be on the agenda, so this meeting presents an opportunity for Canada to demonstrate bold global leadership to do something about extreme poverty. Delivering on our promise to give 0.7% would greatly increase Canada's leadership credibility and help to ensure significant results at the G8. Please ask the Prime Minister and your local Member of Parliament to commit to a solid timeline to keep our promise on foreign aid.

Dear Prime Minister Harper,

As a Canadian I am proud that we are hosting the G8 and G20 Summits in June.  I am writing to ask you to show the world that Canada is a leader in alleviating world poverty.

We can do this by making good on our promise to give point seven percent of our income in foreign aid within ten years. I am looking to you for a a clear timeline of aid increases – about 15% a year – to reach this goal.

Other countries with similar resources to Canada are already giving 0.7% and more. We need to start doing our part in the global effort to fight poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.  Canada has promised many times to reach the UN target of giving 0.7% this target, but, right now,  we are not even half way there.

It's time Canada was a leader and not a laggard in the fight against global poverty. In the next federal budget, I hope you will announce a commitment to achieve the 0.7% target within 10 years.
