Get to the Point

More than one billion people will go to bed hungry tonight. 50 thousand people die every day because of poverty of poverty related causes. It doesn't have to be this way. We have the resources and technologies to make poverty history.

Canadians like to think we are a generous and compassionate people. But we rank only 16th out of 22 donor countries. We are giving only 0.32% of our national income in development aid. That's less than half of the point seven per cent (0.7%) we keep promising to give and failing to deliver.  Donor nations and the UN all agree that 0.7% is the amount necessary to make serious progress towards alleviating extreme poverty in the world.

The world's richest nations are meeting in Canada for the G8 summit in 2010. Foreign aid will be on the agenda, so this meeting presents an opportunity for Canada to demonstrate bold global leadership to do something about extreme poverty. Delivering on our promise to give 0.7% would greatly increase Canada's leadership credibility and help to ensure significant results at the G8. Please ask the Prime Minister and your local Member of Parliament to commit to a solid timeline to keep our promise on foreign aid.
