G8 campaign

From June 25th to 27th 2010, leaders of 20 of the world’s most powerful nations – including Canada – will meet in Huntsville and Toronto, Ontario, for the G8 and G20 Summits.

On the agenda will be issues of global poverty and climate change as well as the response to  the food crisis and the global economic crisis.

This is an opportunity for Canada as the host country to provide global leadership to make sure they take urgent action to keep their promises to double aid to Africa, and do far more, to fight poverty and inequality and to make sure poorest people who are most vulnerable to the global economic crisis are not forgotten in the rush to prop up the banks.

The rich country governments have spent over 11 trillion dollars already on bank bail outs and stimulus packages. At the same time some governments have cut their aid budgets, even though only a small fraction or less than $100 billion in additional aid is needed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals of reducing extreme poverty by half by 2015.

Make Poverty History has teamed up with the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, which has national coalitions in over 100 countries around the world, to speak with one voice at the G8/G20 meeting and to send these leaders a strong message.
