2010 G8/G20 Summits in Canada
In July 2010, leaders of eight of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful nations – including Canada – will meet in Huntsville Ontario for their annual G8 Summit meeting. Right after this meeting, the G20 leaders of the 20 biggest economies will gather in Toronto. It is important that world leaders hear a strong message from Canadians to end poverty.
We Need a Plan to Make Poverty History in Canada
Countries and Canadian provinces that have come up with comprehensive poverty reduction strategies have seen great results. In fact, committing to a concrete plan with timelines and targets to reduce poverty is one of the best things a government can do to reduce poverty. It's time for Canada to develop a poverty reduction strategy.
Let's Get to the Point
Canada needs to increase the amount of aid we give to poorer nations. This isn't a new idea - Canada has been promising to increase our foreign aid for years. Point seven per cent (0.7%) of our national income is the level agreed upon by donor nations and the UN as necessary to make serious progress towards alleviating extreme poverty in the world.
