SOME GOOD AND USEFUL LISTENING

CBC Radio’s “THE SUNDAY EDITION” is one of those institutions in life you can rely on to be entertaining, provocative and always informative.

This year, it’s especially true for anti-poverty activists and for listeners we hope can be brought into the fold of changing the world to a fairer, gentler place.

Over the course of this season, Michael Enright, the show’s savvy and inquisitive host, is exploring the dilemma of poverty…why it still exists and what can be done about it.

The first program is in two segments.  First, an interview with Senator Hugh Segal, an avuncular Tory who works to end poverty with a smile on his face and a ramrod stiff determination in his spine.  This is followed by the tale of an until-now, forgotten Canadian experiment in poverty reduction.  Back in the 70’s, almost the entire population of the town of Dauphin, Manitoba was given a guaranteed annual income for 4 years.  The data from the experiment has finally been sifted through and the results are instructive to say the least.  You can listen to both segments here.

Sunday Edition’s” second program on poverty features a fascinating discussion about poverty and inequality.  It’s a dialogue with Ed Broadbent and Kate Pickett, author of “The Spirit Life:  Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better”.

Good listening…stay tuned for more.
